Work Location Requirements:
 

  • Must be a Wisconsin resident or willing to relocate to Wisconsin before the start date (at the candidate’s expense).
  • Remote within Wisconsin.
  • Must report onsite as needed for hardware-related work, especially while on-call.

Job Description:

Under the general supervision of the Section Chief/Unit Supervisor, the Systems Administrator plans, installs, administers, and supports the enterprise server infrastructure. This includes server hardware, operating systems, virtualization platforms, backup/recovery systems, storage, system software, and related enterprise applications. This role involves providing consulting and customer support services to Wisconsin state agencies and partners while participating in infrastructure projects from design through implementation.The position requires strong customer service skills, enterprise-level thinking, and the ability to collaborate across technical and business teams. This position is accountable for delivering stable, secure, and compliant infrastructure services to state agencies.

 

Responsibilities:

 

  • Enterprise Server Infrastructure Support:
  • Install, configure, test, and implement Windows Server operating systems and VMware virtualization platforms.
  • Perform Windows patching and manage patch management tools to maintain compliance and system stability.
  • Administer and maintain Group Policy Objects (GPOs).
  • Manage enterprise antivirus (AV) tools including installation and endpoint client management.
  • Maintain recommended patch levels, security updates, and compliance configurations.
  • Troubleshoot server, storage, and virtualization issues using intermediate to advanced techniques.
  • Monitor infrastructure performance and recommend resource optimization improvements.
  • Maintain system documentation, implementation schedules, and change management records.
  • Participate in disaster recovery planning, documentation, and testing efforts.
  • Provide oversight for vendor-managed server and infrastructure services.

Infrastructure Consulting & Customer Support:
 

  • Meet with agency customers to understand business and technical requirements.
  • Develop detailed infrastructure designs aligned with enterprise standards.
  • Provide consulting on infrastructure configuration, upgrades, and disaster recovery strategies.
  • Support enterprise task forces and committees related to shared infrastructure initiatives.

Project Participation:
 

  • Participate in complex infrastructure projects under project manager direction.
  • Follow divisional project management and portfolio management standards.
  • Coordinate technical project tasks across teams and agencies.

Customer Service & Communication:
 

  • Respond daily to incidents, service requests, and inquiries.
  • Communicate clearly with both technical teams and business stakeholders.
  • Maintain strong cross-functional working relationships.
  • Develop performance metrics and support service improvement initiatives.

 

Required Skills:

 

  • 5 years of Windows Server Administration.
  • 5 years of Windows patching and patch management tools.
  • 3 years of Group Policy Object (GPO) configuration and administration.
  • 3 years of Public Cloud Infrastructure Administration (IaaS/SaaS environments).
  • 3 years of Anti-Virus tools installation and endpoint management.
  • Strong knowledge of TCP/IP, DNS, DHCP, WINS, and related network protocols.
  • Experience with VMware virtualization (installation, administration, troubleshooting).
  • Knowledge of server hardware including blade systems and storage platforms.
  • Experience with remote server administration.
  • Strong understanding of IT service delivery management best practices.
  • Ability to provide advanced-level infrastructure consulting.
  • Strong communication, documentation, and team collaboration skills.

Preferred Skills:

  • Commvault administration and endpoint client management.
  • Experience implementing MFA within Windows and VMware environments.
  • Experience with monitoring tools across on-prem and public cloud environments.
  • Exposure to data warehousing, document management, workflow, imaging, or GIS systems.
  • Strong customer service orientation and positive relationship management.
  • Ability to function effectively in a team-first environment.
  • Clear written and verbal communication skills.
  • Understanding of project management methodologies and tools.
  • Ability to quickly synthesize complex technical information.
  • Enterprise mindset with a focus on business value delivery.
